Fever

All night I'd be roused by . . .

I laid down exhausted, but unable to sleep.

All night I woke up, muddled and wondering wehere I was. Her fingers would wrap around my arm, her head would sink into my sweating chest. "Sleep," she'd say. "No worry. I be watch you."

I shuddered and hugged myself.

So cold I cannot bend my fingers.
In Chin Hae Korea, wintertime, and I am very, very ill.

I followed her down a damp concrete hallway to a door on the left.

We were passing a display of silk blankets when my thoughts drifted back to

We walked back to the base mostly in silence.

I couldn't stop shaking, couldn't make my teeth stop hitting together.

So why was I thinking about her now?

I felt cold all over.
